Progressive Companies announced as Innovative Project 3rd place winner
The Innovative Project Award is designed to honor projects that break the mold of standard building construction, design, and operations. The projects in question exemplify innovation and astute practices that reflect the goals of the U.S. Green Building Council of West Michigan (USGBC-WM)’s programs. The Innovative Project winner this year was chosen in a close vote between our Board of Directors and Staff. The USGBC-WM is excited to announce Progressive Companies as the third-place winner for their University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Okemos Emergency Center project.
The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Okemos Emergency Center has set a new benchmark for sustainable healthcare facilities by achieving LEED Silver Certification in May 2024. This achievement is particularly significant as it is only the second healthcare project in Michigan to be certified under this version of LEED and the sole emergency center to receive this distinction.
The facility demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship through several key strategies such as water conservation, energy efficiency, improved indoor environment, preservation of open spaces, and waste reduction. By implementing efficient irrigation systems and plumbing fixtures, the center reduced indoor water use by 23% and outdoor water consumption by 51%. The facility also achieved a remarkable 16% energy cost savings, demonstrating that 24/7 healthcare operations can be both efficient and environmentally friendly. The innovative lighting fixtures not only help reduce energy usage but enhance patient and staff experiences.
The center prioritizes the preservation of open spaces, promoting biodiversity, and fostering a connection with nature. A comprehensive solid-waste recycling policy minimizes landfill waste, and the use of materials with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Health Product Declarations (HPDs) ensures a healthy indoor environment.
One of the most innovative aspects of the project was the use of prefabricated exterior wall panels. This approach, while common in wood construction, is relatively rare in steel and metal framing. By utilizing precisely designed and manufactured studs, the construction team achieved the following:
- Reduced construction time by up to 80% compared to traditional methods.
- Decreased reliance on temporary heating during winter months, leading to significant energy savings and reduced carbon emissions.
- Reduced exposure to harmful diesel fumes from temporary heaters.
- Minimized material waste and achieved a low waste-per-square-foot rate, exceeding LEED certification standards.
The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Okemos Emergency Center serves as a model for sustainable healthcare construction. By prioritizing energy efficiency, water conservation, health, and waste reduction, the facility demonstrates that it is possible to create a healthcare environment that is both environmentally responsible and patient-centered.
The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Okemos Emergency Center was awarded at our 2024 Annual Party & Leadership Awards Ceremony on December 5, 2024. Hosted by the U.S. Green Building Council of West Michigan, the evening event was held at the High Five in downtown Grand Rapids. The program included a keynote address by Sandra Lupien, Director, MassTimber@MSU, the Leadership Awards Ceremony, and the celebration of this year’s achievements.
